A man revealed how the beloved Smucker’s Uncrustables are more than just peanut-butter-jelly goodness meant to fill our nostalgic hearts. According to him, they are an unexpected fuel source for some of the most athletic people on the planet: football players.
In a viral TikTok, Jake Dorn (@jakedornn), founder of a company that makes supplements for football players, explains the importance of Uncrustables in the National Football League.
“The NFL spends millions every year on Uncrustables, and here’s exactly why they use the childhood snack to fuel the most elite-level athletes,” Dorn begins in his clip. He then breaks down exactly why the crustless snacks are a concoction of everything a player needs.
Dorn says that because of their snack size, Uncrustables are fast and portable since they come individually packed. He adds that you can take one right out of the freezer or fridge and munch on it quickly.
“That’s why they’re great for locker rooms, they’re great for halftime snacks and they’re great for travel,” Dorn explains.
The TikToker continues that the snacks are “packed with quick carbohydrates” with the bread and jelly. Additionally, the peanut butter adds fat and protein, which every athlete needs. This can provide them “with sustained energy levels that you need.”
Lastly, Dorn says there’s more to these addictive goodies than just taste: a sense of nostalgia.
“Think about all the stress, the expectations, everything that goes into being an NFL athlete,” Dorn argues. “There’s so much on the line, so this brings them back to their childhood days when they started playing football.”
He says that the snack, being reminiscent of childhood peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, helps reduce stress in athletes.
Dorn says because of the size of the league, the demand will be “massive.” And the snacks will provide the right decision necessary for the athletes.
“On average, each NFL team goes through roughly 80,000 Uncrustables per season,” he says, making it difficult to replicate with another snack.
As it turns out, Dorn was absolutely correct. A 2024 New York Times article from the organization’s sports vertical revealed that “NFL teams go through anywhere from 3,600 to 4,300 Uncrustables a week.” This does, in fact, translate to about 80,000 Uncrustables a year, as Dorn mentioned. The report even provided an infographic revealing that the Denver Broncos go through them the most, consuming at least 700 a week. And the Baltimore Ravens, it was discovered in 2024, eat them every day.
As for its convenience, Dorn has a point. The article stated that athletes like that they can throw a packet in their bag and not worry about a mess since it’s in plastic, even if it gets squished. Even Taylor Swift’s beau, Travis Kelce, who’s the tight end for the Chiefs, revealed he eats them “more than anything in the world.”
The article also corroborated the claims Dorn made about...
