Pride of Detroit
Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was named the NFL Week 15 NFL Players Association Community MVP, the union announced on Friday. The recognition is given to a player each week who exemplifies making a positive impact in their hometown or team city. As this week’s winner, Williams will receive a $10,000 donation to his foundation or charity of choice. Williams does have his own foundation—the Jameson Williams Foundation—that strives to “uplift and empower the youth and their families.”
Williams received the honors this week for providing 250 winter coats to students at Detroit Boxing Gym, which supports local children with programs to support mentorship and provide educational resources.
“I’m excited to be selected as the NFLPA Community MVP. I do things in the communities that I am connected to because it is important to me that young people are able to see they can make something of themselves with hard work too,” Williams said in a statement via the NFLPA. “It also is important to me to help families that are less fortunate because you never know how much of a difference that one thing I do might help them.”
Williams regularly gives back to the local Detroit community, including annual drives to give food to families during the Thanksgiving season. A few weeks back, I asked Williams why it was so important to him to give back to families during the holiday season.
“It’s always important to give back to the community. It’s part of me. I just want to show my face and be a part of the culture. That’s the main thing,” Williams said.
Per the press release, Williams is now also eligible for the Alan Page Community Award, the NFLPA’s “highest honor.” That winner will be announced around Super Bowl week.
