Lions vs. Packers: Live score updates, highlights, analysis
Pride of Detroit Pride of Detroit

The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers haven’t opened the season against each other since the 2005 season. That’s 20 years of football between Week 1 openers, and it’s fair to say a lot has happened since then. The Lions have had about 15 years or miserable football, but have recently pulled themselves into NFL relevancy and a potential Super Bowl window. The Packers had the entire Aaron Rodgers era, but are now still trying to figure out what they have in Jordan Love.

Back in 2005, the Lions suffocated the Packers en route to a 17-3 opening week victory. But as a very important reminder, that Week 1 game wasn’t indicative of how the season was going to go for the Lions. They would end up finishing the year 5-11, just barely above Green Bay, whose 4-12 record still stands as their worst season since 1991.

But that’s all in the past now. The Lions are coming off back-to-back NFC North titles and a franchse-best 15-2 seasons. The Packers were a respectable 11-6 last year, and after last week’s Micah Parsons trade, they are suddenly the favorites to win the division. Safe to say the 2025 Lions and Packers are significantly better than their 20-year-old counterparts.

First quarter

The Lions won the coin toss and deferred, giving the ball to Jordan Love and the Packers to start the game. Green Bay picked up an early 20 yards with a shot to Romeo Doubs. Then, on third-and-10, Love connected with Dontayvion Wicks for another 16. That was followed by another third-down conversion—this time to rookie Matthew Golden for 11 yards and into field goal position. Brian Branch then gave the Packers 15 free yards by tossing a Packers player’s helmet. With a lack of pass rush from Detroit, the Packers would find the end zone on yet another third-and-long conversion. Love found Tucker Kraft for a 15-yard touchdown. 7-0 Packers.
