Lions News: Jared Goff has played as Tier-1 QB ‘for three years’
Pride of Detroit Pride of Detroit

When he was first traded from the Los Angeles Rams to the Detroit Lions in 2021, not many thought quarterback Jared Goff would reach the heights he saw in the early stages of his young career. There were some that still believed in the former number one overall pick in 2016, but there were certainly more that thought Goff was going to Detroit to fade into obscurity. However, Goff, alongside Lions coach Dan Campbell, had other plans.

Now in his fifth year in Detroit, Goff is responsible for quarterbacking a legitimate championship contender, and those around the league are giving him his flowers. Over at The Athletic, Mike Sando used a voting panel of NFL coaches and executives to put the quarterbacks around the NFL into tiers, with Goff falling right in the middle of tier two.

“Goff and Burrow are probably the two best anticipation throwers that I have seen lately, so you have to put him at a 1,” an anonymous head coach said. “You might put him at a 2 from a pure quarterback standpoint — he struggles to extend plays — but the guy has played at a 1 level for three years.”

That is some high praise for the California native. On the other end of the spectrum, there were voters who thought he belonged in tier three.

“He’s a 3 because he needs the run game, he needs a defense, he needs all those things,” one of these voters said.
