The running back is confident the Lions aren’t outside their window to win the Super Bowl.
Following a disappointing postseason exit and the departure of talented coaches, many Detroit Lions fans are questioning the state of the franchise.
Why did the Lions fail in the playoffs? Can they fix whatever’s wrong and make it all the way next season? In a chat with Forbes reporter DJ Siddiqi last week, Lions running back David Montgomery offered some thoughts.
“I think ultimately – I don’t think we underestimated our opponent — but I think we weren’t playing our brand of football, and it showed,” he told Siddiqi. “I think if we found a better way to execute, we’ll get over that hump.”
After losing the NFC Championship game two years ago, the Lions were given a rare opportunity to try again with their current staff — retaining both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. They fell short again this season, and won’t have the same luck as the coaches head to new teams.
“A few more pieces here and there to tie everything together, but I think we’re right in the midst of being exactly where we want to be, it just hasn’t happened for us yet,” Montgomery said.
Some Lions fans are trending toward negativity — “it’s just not going to happen for Detroit.” It’s happened to other teams that got so close to the Super Bowl and haven’t been able to return. But Knuckles clearly has confidence the Lions are still in a window to go all the way.
