The Detroit Lions received encouraging news Tuesday as Sam LaPorta’s injury outlook improved following minicamp. Dan Campbell said the Lions’ tight end is trending in the right direction after back surgery ended his 2025 season.
LaPorta underwent surgery for a herniated disc that ended his season in November. Now, the Lions appear optimistic that one of its top pieces can return for training camp.
That timing is relevant for the Lions’ 2026 plans. LaPorta has recorded 186 catches, 2,104 yards, and 20 touchdowns through 42 career games, giving the offense a proven middle-field weapon.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport shared the latest on X, formerly Twitter, explaining how Campbell’s update connects to LaPorta’s recovery and possible long-term future.
“From The Insiders on @NFLNetwork: #Lions star TE Sam LaPorta is trending in the right direction with his injury… which also puts him on track for a big contract extension, potentially, this summer.”

Rapoport then explained why Campbell’s wording carried meaning for Detroit:
“Two parts to this here: First of all, the fact that Dan Campbell would say that, ‘trending in the right direction…’ To speak Dan Campbell, that means he’s likely ready for training camp and is certainly going to be ready for the start of the 2026 season. That is excellent news.”
He then pointed to the 25-year-old pass-catcher’s standing inside the organization:
“He is also, as I mentioned, one of the best tight ends in the NFL, due a contract extension. Considered a priority for the Detroit Lions.”
The contract angle adds another layer to the injury news. LaPorta enters the final year of his rookie deal, and Detroit views him as an offensive cornerstone.
For the Lions, a healthy LaPorta protects continuity and just bolsters the passing game. His presence gives Jared Goff another reliable target and helps keep the offense balanced.
Campbell’s update does not finalize anything, but it points toward a positive summer.
