The Steelers got a win over the Lions on Sunday in a game where DK Metcalf found himself under scrutiny after going after a Lions fan in the stands. The spectator in question claims the wide receiver had a huge overreaction to a pretty innocuous barb, although his account clashes with the one Metcalf relayed to Chad Johnson.

It’s hard to resist the urge to heckle players if you end up within earshot of the opposing team when you attend a sporting event in person. There are plenty of routes you can take in an attempt to get into their head, but most fans are aware that there are certain lines you don’t cross.

Most professional athletes learn to develop pretty thick skin thanks to the verbal abuse they tend to be routinely subjected to in that particular line of work, and they’re just begging for a fine or a suspension if they’re unable to keep their cool when a heckler manages to get the best of them.

That’s what happened when the Lions faced off against the Steelers in Detroit on Sunday, as DK Metcalf caused a stir when he took a swing at a fan in a blue wig who was in the front row behind Pittsburgh’s bench in the second quarter.

Metcalf wasn’t disciplined for going after the fan during the game, but it seems like there’s a very good chance there will be a suspension headed his way in the wake of his team’s 29-24 victory.

The Detroit Free Press tracked down the fan in question, who identified himself as a Michigan resident named Ryan Kennedy. He initially declined to say what he said to Metcalf before claiming the wide receiver went after him for referring to him by his full name:

“My full name isn’t is DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf. He doesn’t like his government name. I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt.

I’m a little shocked. Like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.”

Metcalf declined to speak with the media after the game, but on Sunday night, Chad Johnson relayed what the man who finished with four catches for 42 yards told him while sharing his side of the story, saying:

“He did call him a racial slur; he called him the n-word and he called him mom the c-word. I think with those words being exchanged and the fan saying that, that’s where the action occurred where he threw a punch.”
