Lions’ Blake Miller On Track For Starting RT Spot

Adding an offensive tackle was widely known to be a priority for the Lions leading up to the draft. As such, it came as no surprise when the team attempted to move up the order and land Kadyn Proctor.

That effort was unsuccessful, but Detroit still had tackle options to choose from at No. 17. Blake Miller came off the board at that point. His college career included extensive time seen at right tackle, the spot he is expected to occupy in Detroit. Miller has, to no surprise, been a key presence up front during spring practices.

The Lions have given Miller first-team reps through OTAs and minicamp, as noted by The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy. The starting right tackle spot has of course been accounted for through Penei Sewell in recent years, but the decision to move on from Taylor Decker created an opening on the bllindside. Sewell will move to left tackle beginning in 2026, and Miller is in position to replace him as Detroit’s right tackle starter given where things currently stand.

Evaluation of offensive and defensive linemen is quite limited during the spring. Padded practices only begin once training camp kicks off in July, so Miller still has plenty of work to do to solidify a starting gig. Nevertheless, a strong showing in practice and in the preseason would allow for the Clemson product to confirm his first-team place up front. That would position free agent signing Larry Borom to operate as a swing tackle, a role the Lions would have envisioned for him upon arrival.

The offensive line has seen several recent changes in the case of Detroit. Sewell – who is 25 but already has three first-team All-Pro nods to his name – will be counted on to anchor the unit now and well into the future. Center Cade Mays was added in free agency, while Juice Scruggs was acquired via trade. They will join returnees Christian Mahogany and Tate Ratledge along the interior.

Improved health and performance along the O-line will be critical to the Lions’ efforts with respect to returning to the playoffs in 2026. Miller figures to play a key role in that regard, barring any setbacks during the summer.
