Detroit Lions DE Aidan Hutchinson offered his thoughts on a potential Myles Garrett trade to Detroit.
During Thursday night’s NFL Honors award show, NFL Network reporter Steve Wyche managed to capture a photo of both Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff and defensive end Aidan Hutchinson surrounding Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett in a conversation. If you’re the kind of person that loves to speculate, you could probably be convinced that the two are making their best pitch to get Garrett—who publicly asked to be traded this week—to come to Detroit.
However, before you start buying your Myles Garrett Detroit Lions jerseys, it’s worth noting Hutchinson doesn’t believe there’s much of a chance Garrett lands in Detroit. On the red carpet of the event, Hutchinson talked to Detroit Free Press’ Dave Birkett about a potential Garrett trade, and needless to say, he’s not holding his breath.
“Everyone’s asking me about that. I don’t know,” Hutchinson said. “I don’t think — you can’t have that many dudes on one D-line, I don’t know. Who knows, but I think it’s very unlikely?”
It’s obviously not up to Hutchinson, and there’s no reason to believe he knows what Lions general manager Brad Holmes is up to. But at the same time, he has a point. Detroit is already paying Alim McNeill elite-tier money, and Hutchinson himself is likely to follow as early as this offseason. Beyond that, very few seem to be acknowledging that a Garrett trade would absolutely cripple the Browns’ salary cap, and Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry has repeatedly said he has no interest in trading Garrett.
Hutchinson also offered an update on his injury situation. Birkett said he was walking without an noticeable limp, and the Lions defensive end still believes he could have played in the Super Bowl had the Lions made it there.
“I think so, but you never know,” Hutchinson said.
