A few weeks back, we mentioned a rumor coming out of City Hall, that the Eagles had begun super-early talks regarding their South Philadelphia future. They were putting out “feelers,” you could say. With Lincoln Financial Field’s lease expiring in 2032, they have the option of building a new stadium or renovating the Linc, and Lurie was asked in New Orleans about adding a roof for the purpose of hosting a Super Bowl and other events:

Lurie: “I don’t have a strong opinion about it because you’re torn. I love outdoor football. It love it. I love the cold games. I like the hot games, I like the snow games. On the other hand, does Philadelphia deserve to host the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four, lots of great events? It’s an incredible sports city. Does it deserve that? Yes. So we have to balance all those things.”

He’s still being coy on this topic, and, to be fair, they’ve got time to think about it. It’s true that seven years isn’t that long in terms of stadium planning, more than enough to get through the 2026 World Cup and see what the new Flyers and Sixers’ stadium timeline looks like. Then they can decide if they want to join with those teams and the Phillies in a comprehensive sports complex revamp. The Eagles are the final piece of the puzzle as Comcast, HBSE, and the Phils move ahead on a new setup that we’re 99.9999999% sure will be based on Atlanta’s “Battery” complex.

I’m willing to bet that most fans are probably on the fence about this, similar to how Lurie feels. Football was meant to be played in the elements and snow games are the stuff of legend. Just look at three weeks ago as a recent example. But as long as the Linc is open air, Philadelphia is limited in what it can host because of seasonal weather changes, and the indoor calendar across the street is already stuffed because you’ve got the Flyers, Sixers, Wings, Disney on Ice, and a packed schedule at THE FARG. So there are plenty of moving parts here. The Sixers domino finally fell, after more than two years, and the Birds’ decision will determine the future of the complex.
