The NFL’s 2026 Hall of Fame class modern-era nominees are here. As always, it’s a lengthy list (128 names) that will be substantially cut down in coming months, but it’s still newsworthy. Eight former Steelers made the initial cut: kicker Gary Anderson, guard David DeCastro, linebacker James Farrior, outside linebacker James Harrison, defensive back Carnell Lake, center Maurkice Pouncey, defensive back Allen Rossum, and wide receiver Hines Ward.
I’ll preface this by saying I don’t think a single one makes it in 2026. With names such as Drew Brees and Larry Fitzgerald headlining the class, there’s a lot of big names and steep competition.
But of those eight former Steelers, Hines Ward is probably the most deserving. But he might not be the most likely. It’s hard to understate just how many elite receivers he’s going up against, and Ward wasn’t even a finalist last year (and three receivers who were — Torry Holt, Reggie Wayne, and Steve Smith Sr. — are still eligible for the upcoming class). The odds remain low for Ward to make it into the Hall at this point.
First-year eligible center Maurkice Pouncey might have a slightly better chance. While Pro Football Reference’s Hall of Fame monitor still has him decently short of Canton standards, he’s still listed eighth all-time at his position. He’s a nine-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro, and most importantly, a member of the Hall’s own all-2010s team.
James Harrison also might have a mild chance. He has a similar Pro Football Reference HOF monitor rating to Pouncey, albeit at a more stacked position. But Harrison’s peak was something truly special, with the 2008 Defensive Player of the Year award to go along with five career Pro Bowls, and two All-Pros. He also has one of the most iconic Super Bowl moments to go along with his two rings.
