We’re focusing on players who are reasonably familiar names but may not make the roster.
Seattle Seahawks veterans report to training camp on Tuesday, with first practice to come on Wednesday. We’re almost ready for another NFL season and I don’t feel like time is moving fast enough.
There are numerous positional battles worth paying attention to, even if not necessarily at the top of the depth chart. For today’s discussion I want to focus on roster bubble players, more specifically which ones you believe are far from a lock to make the 53-man roster. I suppose Noah Fant would’ve been a popular answer right up until his bubble burst on Sunday, so we’ll have to look for new answers.
On offense I think that, of the veterans, wide receiver Dareke Young is on shaky ground with the Tory Horton and Ricky White III picks, while Kenny McIntosh is potentially fighting for a roster spot following the addition of Damien Martinez. The offensive line is interesting because I think Anthony Bradford will be a popular name as being on the bubble, but I believe that, unless the noise regarding him looking improved at OTAs and minicamp was a total smokescreen, he’s going to be on the roster.
On defense, I think Mike Morris is trending toward cut instead of keep. Perhaps the only “saving grace” for him is Rylie Mills is likely not going to be able to play until midseason at the earliest, so he’d just remain on the injury list. The idea of Mike Morris has not met the reality; injuries cut his rookie season short and he barely saw the field on defense in year two. If I could engineer a hot take, if the Seahawks are sniffing around for game-changing pass rushers (which, through the grapevine, I’ve heard has happened this offseason), Uchenna Nwosu may not be a lock to stay even on his restructured deal.
Another name to watch at safety is Jerrick Reed II, who’s had injuries shorten his seasons back-to-back and now the Seahawks have got Nick Emmanwori on the team and they brought in a special teams/reserve safety in D’Anthony Bell. It may just be an unfavorable numbers game for Reed.
Lastly, Nehemiah Pritchett’s underwhelming rookie season and the return of Shaquill Griffin I believe puts Pritchett in a spot where his roster security is unquestioned. That Seattle spent the whole offseason looking for veteran corner help even after re-signing Josh Jobe reads more like a bad sign for Pritchett than anything regarding Jobe.
Anyway, those are my two cents. They could change once training camp begins and we all have more information. Who are your roster bubble candidates? Make your voice heard by scrolling down to the comments section!
