Clearly learning nothing from what the New York Jets have experienced over the last two seasons, reports indicate that Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard is “in play” to be traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers following the team’s offloading of George Pickens. Lazard, of course, is Aaron Rodgers’ pal, having spent his entire career paling around with the controversial QB.
Since singing a four year, $44 million deal with the Jets in 2023, a couple of months before they signed Aaron Rodgers, the 29-year-old Lazard has since had 60 catches for 841 yards and six touchdowns in the two seasons since, while largely burning Jets’ fans hair out during the entirety of that time.
Lazard was just one of many Rodgers cronies that they brought to town to appease him, including offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, fellow wide receiver Randall Cobb, backup quarterback Tim Boyle, and Pro Bowl pass catcher Davante Adams for a half-season rental.
Despite how little Rodgers and the rest of his pals contributed to the Jets last season, the Steelers seem prepared to hand him the reigns to the franchise all the same, as evidenced by their reported interested in Lazard. Not only that, but Rodgers also seems to be influencing broader team decision, as reports indicate he likely affected their draft strategy and was aware of the team trading George Pickens.
“Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Jets receiver Allen Lazard is ‘in play’ to be traded to the Steelers. Why Lazard? Because Rodgers completely and totally trusts him. And Lazard, for whatever reason, performs much better with Rodgers than he does without him. The possibility hinges largely if not entirely on Rodgers signing with the Steelers. While nothing with Rodgers is ever done until it’s done, the persistent thinking continues to be that it will happen.” [via ProFootballTalk]
Lazard, an undrafted free agent out of Iowa State in 2018, spent the first five seasons of his career with Rodgers in Green Bay (before the duo moved to New York), with the best season of his career coming in 2022, when he had 60 catches for 788 yards and six touchdowns, average numbers at best.
