The Las Vegas Raiders selected running back Ashton Jeanty with the sixth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, suggesting he’ll be a focal point of their offense in 2025. However, that might not be the case based on recent comments from head coach Pete Carroll.

Speaking to reporters, Carroll offered a lot of praise for veteran running back Raheem Mostert and seemed to suggest the team is considering a committee approach this season.

“They’re gonna show us that when they get the chance to compete. I love having multiple guys play. I’m not relying on one guy. Thunder and Lightning back in the day, whatever it takes to get it done. We’re going to let the guys play for their play time. Raheem, I love having him. He’s an experienced guy, he’s been a great speedster for years. We’ve defended him for years and he’s been a nightmare for us.”

The draft capital invested in Jeanty would’ve suggested that he immediately became the Raiders’ featured running back. Because he was the sixth overall pick, Jeanty’s contract value ($35.895 million) and total guarantees ($35.895 million) both rank among the highest-paid NFL players at his position.

Mostert, age 33, is coming off a rough season with the Miami Dolphins. Across 13 games played, he made just 1 start and averaged just 3.3 yards per carry with as many fumbles (two) as total touchdowns. Signed this offseason to a one-year deal worth $1.6 million, Las Vegas is hoping he can return closer to his previous form in Miami when he averaged 4.9 yards per carry from 2022-’23.

Carroll made it clear that Jeanty has looked like the caliber of player they expected when drafting him. The rookie has been receiving work that would enable him to be a three-down player, even impressing as a receiving option.

For now, though, Carroll is opening the door for a committee backfield in Chip Kelly’s offense. While it would certainly help keep Jeanty a bit fresher later in the season, diminished touches would reduce his chances of winning Offensive Rookie of the Year.
