San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a serious car accident back on July 14. While the incident took almost two weeks to surface, the details that have since come out reveal just how dangerous the situation was.
It’s already been reported that Shanahan suffered a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose, and a broken hand while requiring 40 stitches on his head. Now, thanks to more reported details, the reason Shanahan needed so many stitches has now been revealed.
Shanahan has ceded control of the 49ers to assistant head coach Jim Foerster in the meantime. Foerster will continue coaching the 49ers until Shanahan, who was only at training camp for roughly 30 minutes on Sunday, is ready to resume his previous duties.
Meanwhile, according to Chris Simms’ recent appearance on ‘PFT Live‘ along with Mike Florio, Shanahan came “this close” to losing his right eye as a result of the car accident.

As Simms said, nearly losing an eye is jarring. An injury that serious naturally takes some time to recover from. There’s no word on how long Shanahan’s recovery process might take.
Others have questioned the timeline of events, or why Shanahan can’t be around the team more. Yet, it’s become clear that this wasn’t a minor accident.
Shanahan is widely regarded as one of the best offensive minds in the NFL. Opposing teams love to pop on film of Shanahan’s 49ers offenses and mimic some of his play designs.
The NFL is a much better place with Shanahan executing his game plan on the sidelines. Hopefully he can get back to doing what he loves in the near future.
