Brock Purdy played only one series of the 49ers’ preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders, and that could be all he gets during the exhibition schedule.
Purdy looked sharp as he led a field goal drive on the 49ers’ opening series, which stalled in the red zone, going five of seven for 66 yards.
The 49ers face the Los Angeles Chargers in their preseason finale next Saturday, and Kyle Shanahan was non-committal when asked if Purdy would be involved.
Shanahan said:
“We’ll see how this week goes. We have a long week. I love that we got three practices in a row for ourselves. Then we’ll take a day off and get ready for the Chargers, but we’ll see how this week goes with Brock [Purdy] and with the rest of our starters. I would love the guys to play, but I just have to measure it out and see how this week goes.”
Reading between the lines, it sounds as if — providing he is happy with the work they get in this coming week — Shanahan won’t risk playing Purdy and the starters in another meaningless game.
And, after seeing right guard Dominick Puni sustain what the 49ers believe to be a PCL injury that could keep him out a few weeks, that would probably be the right decision.
Purdy was, for the most part, on point in his cameo against the Raiders, demonstrating an extremely strong connection with Ricky Pearsall. His worst throw came in the red zone, as a slightly off-target pass to Demarcus Robinson bounced off the receiver’s hands.
In short, Purdy looked ready for the season. He did not look like a quarterback who needed extra seasoning ahead of the Week 1 kickoff. As a result, we might not see Purdy again until the 49ers attempt to continue their recent run of dominance in Seattle.
