PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig suffered a hamstring injury early in the team’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night. During the visitors’ second series, he came off the field and headed into the medical tent, exiting without his helmet.

Herbig will not return to the matchup.

Along with kicker Chris Boswell, Herbig was one of two Steelers who were active after not dressing against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. Now in his third season with Mike Tomlin’s team, Herbig backs up Alex Highsmith on the depth chart.

Herbig made five starts last season. He totaled 49 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles over his first two campaigns in black and gold. He’s played in 30 games as depth behind Highsmith and T.J. Watt.

Other Steelers outside linebackers that dressed for the matchup were Eku Leota, Jack Sawyer, DeMarvin Leal and Julius Welschof.

Highsmith has been out with a groin injury, though he’s recently done some light jogging and work on the side as he works to return.

The Buccaneers capped the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Teddy Bridgewater to Bucky Irving. D’Shawn Jamison’s roughing the kicker penalty gave Tampa new life, allowing it to score two snaps later.
