DETROIT — After tackling Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams, Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Brandin Echols exited the game with 2:49 to go in the second quarter. He’s doubtful to return with a groin injury.
Echols remained seated on the ground, waiting for trainers to approach to check on him. Echols got up a moment later and walked to the sideline under his own power. He then made his way to the blue medical tent.
Echols emerged from the tent and headed to the Steelers’ bench without his helmet. Jalen Ramsey replaced Echols at the nickelback position, while Chuck Clark entered to fill in for Ramsey at safety.
Echols, a fifth-year pro, has played in all 15 of the Steelers’ games this season. Entering Sunday, he had 44 total tackles, six passes defended, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He spent the first four years of his career with the New York Jets, pulling down five interceptions.
The Steelers’ defense had made a few stops against the Lions in the first half, thanks in part to help from rookie outside linebacker Jack Sawyer, who made his first Steelers start. The Steelers’ secondary is fairly thin, with Jabrill Peppers as a backup safety and Daryl Porter Jr. as a backup cornerback.
