The Dallas Cowboys did not take many risks in the 2025 NFL Draft, largely selecting the best player available with each pick. However, the club’s gamble on cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. has already backfired somewhat, due to an injury setback suffered during training camp.

As reported by Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Revel suffered a setback during his rehab from the ACL tear he sustained last year. The injury will likely sideline him for an additional 6–8 weeks, meaning he will not be medically cleared to play in the regular-season opener on Thursday, Sept. 4.

The Cowboys’ depth chart at cornerback has already been hit hard by injuries this summer. With starter Trevon Diggs (knee) still on the Physically Unable to Perform list, Dallas has also lost cornerback Caelen Carson (hyperextended knee), and Josh Butler is still recovering from last season’s ACL tear in Week 13.

Revel, viewed as a first-round talent entering last season, suffered an ACL tear in September during a practice with East Carolina. The Cowboys were initially hopeful he would see the field in training camp after surgeon Dr. Daniel Cooper told NFL teams in February that Revel would likely be fully cleared to return to play by the summer.

There remains uncertainty regarding whether Trevon Diggs will be cleared to play in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. In January, Diggs underwent chondral bone graft surgery in his left knee, and the team is not confident that he will be game-ready for the opener.

This leaves Dallas dangerously thin at cornerback, with DaRon Bland as the only surefire healthy and proven starter. All of this also comes at a time when the Cowboys’ offensive line has been hit by injuries, with Tyler Smith (knee tendinitis) and Tyler Guyton (bone fracture in knee) both currently unavailable.
