The Cleveland Browns just had a 23-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, a game that saw the surprising debut of QB Shedeur Sanders in the second half after QB Dillon Gabriel was ruled out with a head injury. The second half didn’t go well for Sanders, who was 4-of-16 for 47 yards and 1 interception. Nonetheless, what happens at quarterback next week against the Las Vegas Raiders? Will Sanders get his first career start?
After the game, head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed the team’s quarterback plan for the Raider game:
According to Stefanski, if Gabriel clears the concussion protocol, he will remain the team’s starter against Las Vegas. He later acknowledged that if Gabriel doesn’t clear the protocol, Sanders will start over veteran QB Bailey Zappe, the other quarterback on the roster.
That means we will be playing the waiting game. Some players clear the concussion protocol quickly, while others end up being in it for weeks. Although Sanders’ second half performance was a bit of a buzz kill, we do have to consider the fact that, as Stefanski pointed out after the game, those were the first first-team reps that Sanders has taken all season.
