When Kendrick Lamar was surprisingly announced as the halftime performer for Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans, it brought forth a lot of questions. Sure, Lamar is one of the biggest stars in the music industry today. But a lot of his songs aren’t exactly TV friendly and many fans wondered if his beef with Drake would overshadow the show itself.
The answer to the latter of those questions appears to be “Yes.” But in the best way possible.
Over the summer, Lamar’s “Not Like Us” diss track rose to the top of the charts so quickly with such fervor that Drake sued his record label over illegally promoting the song. That alone would probably be enough for Lamar to claim victory. But it’s not enough for him. No, this man really, really hates Drake.
How much, you ask? Well, enough that he is absolutely adamant that he gets to play “Not Like Us” as part of his Super Bowl 59 halftime show set.
The U.S. Sun reports that multiple advisers have suggested to Kendrick that he not play the track given the event and preceding legal action. But Lamar will not be stopped.
“They claim some have advised him to ditch the track from his setlist, fearing that it could spark massive controversy at the iconic NFL showpiece,” the rerport states. “The pleas, however, have fallen firmly on deaf ears.”
“He won’t back down,” one source reportedly told the media outlet. “He doesn’t care about what Drake says or what he thinks about the song; it’s a hit. Kendrick won’t be silenced or shut down.”
Drake eventually dropped the suit against UMG with no money exchanging hands between the two parties. But it seems as if that alone is not enough to quash the beef, and Lamar is ready to deal the final blow.
