ESPN digital staff consolidated recent reporting from Adam Schefter:
Mike McCarthy, the former Dallas Cowboys coach who was in the running for the Saints job, is no longer planning to coach this year, and Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has emerged as a lead candidate to fill the New Orleans vacancy, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Tuesday night.
No final decision has been made by New Orleans, which has held second interviews with three known candidates: Moore, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Moore’s second interview was Monday, a day after his Eagles offense erupted for 55 points in an NFC Championship Game rout of the Washington Commanders.
First thought – why would anyone want to coach the Saints? Are you going to the playoffs with one of Derek Carr, Spencer Rattler, or Jake Haener? Drew Brees ain’t walking through that door in 2025 and Alvin Kamara can’t do it by himself. Chris Olave suffered multiple concussions this past season and that defense needs a lot of work.
Second thought – we all seem to be in agreement that the NFL hiring process is a big fat joke. Kellen Moore is coaching in the Super Bowl in less than two weeks, yet he’s interviewing for other jobs. Shane Steichen did it, Jonathan Gannon did it, and now Moore is doing it. You can’t blame them, because that’s just how the cycle works, but it shouldn’t have to be that way. All you have to do is ban teams from making coaching hires until the Super Bowl is over, push the draft back two or three weeks, and adjust accordingly. That way you don’t have this ridiculous carousel taking place before the biggest game of a lot of these guys’ lives.
If Moore ends up going to New Orleans, and the Eagles’ offense doesn’t play well in the Super Bowl, you know we’re gonna hear it. We’re gonna hear that Moore was “distracted” and we’re going to be dragged down into an argument that can’t be proven true or false without going inside Moore’s head via lobotomy or Marvel super power. But the NFL CAN prevent these situations from happening in the first place. Fix it, Roger Goodell.
