Kellen Moore is reportedly going to coach the Saints
Whatever happens after tonight’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, Kellen Moore might be staying in town for a while. The current Eagles offensive coordinator is reportedly set to become the next coach of the New Orleans Saints, which would likely become official once terms are reached after Philadelphia’s championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
A former Cowboys backup quarterback and offensive coordinator, Moore has spent the last two years as OC for the Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers. This next gig would be his first opportunity as a head coach, a job many thought he might get in Dallas during the recent cycle of coaching changes.
Moore interviewed with Dallas a few weeks ago but the job ultimately went to the team’s most recent OC, Brian Schottenheimer. It’s unclear where the lack of mutual interest fell between the Cowboys and Moore, but the two parties know each other well after Moore’s eight years with the organization.
At one point, Moore was in competition for the Saints job with Dallas’ last head coach, Mike McCarthy. But about two weeks ago, McCarthy reportedly pulled himself out of the process and announced that he would be taking 2025 off. It is generally assumed that McCarthy realized he was not New Orleans’ first choice and decided to save face by ending things on his terms, rather than being passed over by a former assistant.
The Cowboys are not slated to face the Saints in 2025, having just played them last year. The regular rotation with the NFC South won’t come around again until 2027. Still, there’s always a chance of Dallas and New Orleans meeting up in other ways through the preseason, playoffs, or both teams finishing in the same place in their respective divisions.
As for the rival Eagles, Moore’s departure would leave them looking for a new offensive coordinator. Kevin Patullo, an offensive assistant who has worked under Nick Sirianni in both Philly and Indianapolis, is considered the favorite. Current QB coach Doug Nussmeier could also be in the mix, but he’s more likely to become the OC under Moore in New Orleans.
Kellen Moore’s success as a head coach will be a talking point in Dallas as another potential “one who got away.” Hopefully, Brian Schottenheimer will have enough success that the Cowboys won’t have to feel any regret.
