The New England Patriots are 11-2 heading into their bye week, and a big reason for their success has been the play of second-year quarterback Drake Maye. As a result of Maye’s sudden star turn, his popularity has skyrocketed, and that has led to the creation of a nickname that one of his teammates, Kayshon Boutte, does not understand.
In the blink of an eye, Maye has become one of the most popular players in the NFL. His humble demeanor, combined with his stellar play on the field (3,412 passing yards, 25 total touchdowns), has helped endear him to many folks, particularly in the New England region.
As a result, Maye has earned a new nickname, with many fans referring to him as Drake “Drake Maye” Maye. Why or how that came to be is unknown, and even Boutte is wondering why Maye has earned such an odd nickname.
“Do anybody know what they mean when they be like Drake ‘Drake Maye’ Maye?” Boutte said during the team’s win over the Giants. “What the hell does that mean? They giving him a middle name, I guess.”
For what it’s worth, Maye already has a middle name (Lee), so that likely isn’t the reason why this nickname came to be. Regardless, it appears the nickname is here to stay, as it was even added to his player page on pro-football-reference.com.
The more Maye wins, the more nicknames will likely come his way. New England is enjoying its time off in Week 14, but when it returns to action in Week 15, it will have a big matchup against the Buffalo Bills on its hands.
