The Kansas City Chiefs’ future in Missouri has been the subject of speculation for several months, but the city’s mayor is optimistic that the club will stay right where they are.
Officials in Kansas City, Kansas, have presented the Kansas City Chiefs with an offer to relocate their team there, with the promise of a new domed stadium. The Chiefs have until June 30 to accept that offer.
The leases for the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium and the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium expire in 2030. With pressure on Missouri state officials to reach an agreement, Kansas City (Missouri) Mayor Quinton Lucas expressed “optimism” that the Chiefs will stay put, per Blair Kerkhoff of the Kansas City Star:
“I’ve had optimism all the time, and I think there are more and more reasons for that. I said (last summer) that I believe we’d have a compelling Missouri state offer. We’ve gotten to that.
“It took a little longer than perhaps some would have wanted. I think the local government conversation is something that continues to proceed, as well…Kansas City, Missouri continues extension conversations with the Royals, and with the Chiefs the outreach is ongoing.”
The Kansas City Chiefs plan to spend $1.15 billion in renovations at Arrowhead Stadium if they stay put. The Royals are looking to secure a new 34,000-seat stadium that would be built somewhere in Kansas City, Missouri.
Arrowhead Stadium (opened in 1972) is the third-oldest NFL stadium, behind Soldier Field (home of the Chicago Bears, which opened in 1924) and Lambeau Field (Green Bay Packers, opened in 1957). The Bears are working on plans for a new stadium that would hopefully open in 2028.
The Kansas City football team spent its first three seasons (1960 to ’62) in Dallas, where they had the “Texans” team name. The club relocated to Kansas City in 1963, playing at the since-demolished Municipal Stadium until 1971.
The Chiefs will kick off their 2025 season on Sept. 5, when they take on Justin Herbert and the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers. The game will be held at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil, the first 2025 game of the NFL International Series.
