Kansas City Chiefs star wide receiver Rashee Rice will serve 30 days in prison and five years of probation after fleeing the scene of a high-speed crash in the Dallas metro area last year. Rice was facing the potential of up to 20 years in jail after the initial charges.
ESPN‘s Adam Schefter reports that a Dallas judge informed Rice that he can serve the 30 days in prison during any part of the five-year probationary period. Schefter also reports that Rice will likely face a multi-game suspension from the NFL, which was waiting for a verdict before determining its own punishment.
For Rice, it’s just the latest misstep in a year full of them following a breakout rookie season. One month after the car crash, he was named as a suspect in an assault case at a Dallas-area nightclub. Dallas police later declined to press charges after the accuser signed an affidavit of non-prosecution.
But his troubles didn’t stop there.
Shortly after news of the alleged assault became public, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk revealed that Rice was at the center of an alleged shooting involving a former SMU basketball player whom Rice believed was seeing his girlfriend at the time.
Just months after that incident, it was Rice’s mother, Marsha Kearney, who was caught allegedly stealing packages from a neighbor. Kearney was caught on video taking the packages and was identified by her custom Chiefs jersey, which read “Momma-Rice” with the number 4 on the back.
Things didn’t get much better for Rice on the field, either. He tore his LCL in a mid-season matchup with AFC West division rival Los Angeles. The incident occurred when Patrick Mahomes threw an interception and subsequently collided with Rice while trying to make a tackle.
Rice missed the rest of the 2024 NFL season. Thankfully for Rice, head coach Andy Reid says he expects him to be healthy in time for training camp ahead of the 2025 season.
