Things got heated between Josh Simmons and Ashton Gillotte at Chiefs training camp on Tuesday morning, with the rookies caught on camera throwing hands during a 9-on-7 drill.

Simmons and Gillotte have had some notable battles in team practices this offseason, but things boiled over today after the former got a bit too aggressive on a block. Gillotte responded by shoving the offensive tackle and pulling his jersey, which resulted in Simmons taking a swing at him.

The edge rusher responded with a punch of his own, and the two got into a wild scuffle before teammates rushed in to break them up.

Josh Simmons And Ashton Gillotte Have Become Training Camp Rivals

A rivalry has evolved between the two rookies as Josh Simmons has been getting plenty of reps at left tackle while Ashton Gillotte has been a standout with his explosive bursts off the edge.

While this is definitely a case of iron sharpening iron and training camp fights are typical for NFL teams, there’s always a risk of chemistry being impacted.

Meanwhile, Simmons continues to prove that he was worth the risk at No. 32 in this year’s NFL Draft following his final season at Ohio State being derailed by a torn patellar tendon.

There were concerns about his durability and overall fitness, but it appears all of the questions have been answered so far, with the rookie earning praise from Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and several of his teammates.

As for Gillotte, the third-round Edge from Louisville has been building a reputation for himself at camp and is being touted as a potential starter after impressing with his burst and hand action.

Both players have shown that they aren’t the type to back down from a fight, which could bode well for the Chiefs. But we hope their fight doesn’t sour things between them off the field.
