Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has worked extensively to bring a WNBA team to the City of Fountains, but the dream will have to wait.
Patrick and Brittany Mahomes have changed the sports landscape in Kansas City, Missouri, and are using their platform to bring another professional club to town. Per ESPN’s Adam Teicher, Patrick said in October that bringing a WNBA team to Kansas City is “a no-brainer.”
Unfortunately for the three-time Super Bowl champion, the wait for a WNBA team in Kansas City will have to continue. On Monday, the league announced that it had granted expansion franchises to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia.
Cleveland’s franchise will join the league in 2028, with Detroit and Philadelphia following suit in 2029 and 2030, respectively. Toronto and Portland were also granted franchises who will join the WNBA next year.

Brittany and Patrick Mahomes have stakes in the Kansas City Current of the National Women’s Soccer League, with the Chiefs’ superstar also holding stakes in the Kansas City Royals of Major League Baseball and the Kansas City of Major League Soccer.
Kansas City, Missouri, previously had an NHL team in the Kansas City Scouts, now the New Jersey Devils. It also had the Kansas City Kings of the NBA, but the club relocated to Sacramento in 1985, where it still resides today.
Coming off a brutal 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, Mahomes and the Chiefs will begin the year of hopeful redemption against the AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 5.
That game will be held at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil, the first contest in the 2025 NFL International Series. The first NFL game in Brazil (also at Arena Corinthians) took place last year, with the Eagles defeating the Green Bay Packers.
