The Kansas City Chiefs made a major announcement on Monday. They revealed their move from Missouri and Arrowhead Stadium. The team will have a new domed stadium in Kansas. It was quite the shock around the country.
They announced in a joint statement from owner and chairman Clark Hunt that the team will be heading to Kansas City, Kansas.
“Today we are excited to take another momentous step for the future of the franchise,” Hunt’s announcement read. “We have entered into an agreement with the State of Kansas to host Chiefs football beginning with the 2031 NFL season.
“In the years ahead, we look forward to designing and building a state-of-the-art domed stadium and mixed-use district in Wyandotte County, and a best-in-class training facility, team headquarters, and mixed-use district in Olathe, totaling a minimum of $4 billion of development in the State of Kansas.”
How did Missouri lose the #Chiefs? We asked Clark Hunt.
Both Hunt and President Mark Donovan said when negotiating with MO, they talked with state, county and city. When negotiating with KS, Chiefs only talked to the state. Seems like more united front won. #moleg #ksleg @kmbc pic.twitter.com/xDguhZb1Tk

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt spoke about the controversial decision. He attributed his decision to the state not convincing him to stay. Since no one resolved the issues in time, he proceeded with his plans. Developers will build the new $3 billion domed stadium in Wyandotte County, Kansas, in 2031.
“We had a great dialogue with Missouri all the way through the end of last week,” Hunt said Monday. “Just frankly, not everything was resolved that needed to be resolved.”
“The big difference is we were working with one party here, the state of Kansas, and the state of Missouri we were working with the Governor’s office, the county and also the city. We just didn’t get there from a timing standpoint.”
The new Kansas City Chiefs stadium will be in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Their current home is Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri. There will be a significant difference in mileage for the fan base.
It is approximately 20 to 30 miles between where Arrowhead and the new stadium will be located. A new team headquarters and practice facility will be built in Olathe, according to KansasCity.com.
The new stadium is planned to be completed in time for the 2031 NFL season. A lease at Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs goes through the 2030 season. The team has been playing there since 1972. It is currently the oldest in the AFC. Arrowhead will only hold that title for five more years.
This news comes amid the Kansas City Chiefs missing the postseason for the first time since the 2014 season. Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL, and Travis Kelce might retire. It’s been quite the year.
