It’s still unclear what the future holds for Travis Kelce after the Chiefs fell to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. The tight end has made it clear retirement isn’t out of the question, but the Chiefs have reportedly given him a firm deadline when it comes to making that decision.
Travis Kelce was far from the only player on the Chiefs who was essentially a non-factor during their 40-22 loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, but plenty of fans couldn’t help but wonder if his best days might be behind him based on how he played during the one-sided affair.
There’s little doubt Kelce is still a talented tight end most NFL teams would love to have on their roster, but all signs point to things starting to trend downward for the 35-year-old who recently wrapped up his 12th season in the league.
At this point, Kelce doesn’t really have anything left to prove. The 10-time Pro Bowler and three-time Super Bowl champion is a virtual lock to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer whenever he decides to hang up his cleats, and he’s set for life with the money he’s made even before you take the fortune of the significant other he seems to have a pretty bright future with into account.
As a result, it’s hard to imagine many people would blame Kelce for deciding to retire; earlier this week, he acknowledged he was “kicking everything down the road” and in no rush to make “any crazy decisions,” but it would appear the clock has started ticking courtesy of the only franchise he’s ever played for.
According to The Athletic, the Chiefs have informed Kelce that they expect him to inform them of his intentions for next season “around March 14,” a deadline that is inextricably linked to the $11.5 million roster bonus (which comprises the bulk of his $17.1 million salary for the 2025 campaign) they have to pay out on the 15th.
The deadline falls on a Friday, and when you consider new episodes of his New Heights podcast typically drop on a Wednesday, we could be treated to a Very Special Episode that week. However, we’ll just have to wait and see how he opts to handle the situation.
