We still don’t know if Travis Kelce plans to return for his 13th season with the Chiefs after he acknowledged retirement was on the table in the wake of their Super Bowl loss. However, it sounds like he’s already made up his mind based on what the team’s GM had to say at the NFL Combine.
At this point, Travis Kelce doesn’t really have much left to prove more than a decade into an NFL career that will undoubtedly result in him becoming a first-ballot Hall of Famer whenever he decides to hang up his cleats.
The tight end had a chance to pad his already stellar résumé with the fourth Super Bowl victory of his career earlier this month, but he was largely a nonfactor while hauling in four passes for 39 yards in the showdown where the Eagles prevented the Chiefs from pulling off the three-peat.
It was kind of hard to imagine Kelce would choose to end his career on that sour note when you consider all signs point to Kansas City once again being the team to beat in the AFC next season, but after the game, he admitted there was a chance he could retire while making it clear he wasn’t in a rush to make a decision either way.
The Chiefs subsequently gave him a timeline after reportedly informing him they expect to know what he plans to do midway through March. He still has some time to decide, but it would appear he’s done exactly that after Kansas City GM Brett Veach shed some light on a recent discussion he had with Kelce while speaking with the media at the NFL Combine.

Veach recounted the talk he had with Kelce in the wake of the Super Bowl while denying there was any firm deadline in place, saying:
“How we left it at the end of the season was that he was fired up. He has one more year on the contract. We still think he has that fire and desire to play. As far as I’m concerned, there is no deadline.
I think we left it as he’d be back and we’re excited to get him back and get him going.”
It seems somewhat safe to assume Kelce is hoping to save the announcement for an episode of the New Heights podcast (his brother Jason has hinted he’s already made up his mind without revealing how he’s leaning), so it’ll be interesting to see if the official decision is expedited now that Veach has seemingly let the cat out of the bag.
