It is safe to say the NFL did not imagine this reality when they scheduled the Kansas City Chiefs to host the Denver Broncos on the Christmas evening edition of “Thursday Night Football” in Week 17.

What was billed as a major divisional contest between a pair of 2024 playoff teams now sees the 6-9 Chiefs already eliminated from the postseason with superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes lost for the season with a torn ACL and LCL.

Still, the teams will play on Thursday with kickoff scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Arrowhead time. The game will be broadcast nationally on Amazon Prime with local coverage available on KSHB/41 in Kansas City and KMGH/7 in Denver.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Kansas City has opened as an 11.5-point underdog in the game.

In Week 11, the Chiefs opened as a 3.5-point favorites when they traveled to Denver to face the Broncos. Ultimately, the Broncos won 22-19. Oddsmakers weren’t totally prepared to abandon Kansas City even in the wake of Mahomes’ injury, and the Chiefs traveled to face the Tennessee Titans in Week 16 as favorites.

In Sunday’s 26-9 loss to the Titans, however, the Chiefs lost backup quarterback Gardner Minshew — likely also to an ACL tear. With longtime practice squad quarterback Chris Oladokun likely to start for Kansas City on Thursday, the Chiefs now face underdog odds not seen in a generation.

Although highly likely to make the postseason, the 12-3 Broncos still have work to do to hold off the 11-4 Los Angeles Chargers to win the AFC West. Denver will seek to get right after falling at home to the Jacksonville Jaguars 34-20 in Week 16. Denver opened as a 3.5-point favorite in that game.
