The Pittsburgh Steelers lost their Week 2 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks 31-17, dropping them to 1-1 on the season. The turning point of the game came after the Seahawks kicked a field goal to take a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter.
The ball bounced in the landing zone and went through the hands of Kaleb Johnson. The rookie let the ball bounce, assuming it would go into the end zone for a touchback – only that is not the rule in the NFL. The ball was then recovered in the end zone by the Seahawks for a touchdown, which put them up 24-14 – a lead the Steelers wouldn’t be able to overcome.
The rookie out of Iowa was asked if he knew the rule after the game.
“If I was sure, if I wasn’t sure, it doesn’t matter,” Johnson said. “ I still gotta do what I gotta do, and I still gotta go in there and execute the way it needs to be executed.”
Johnson wasn’t put back to return the ensuing kick, and it would be safe to say his time as the kick returner is done.
