The New York Jets may be one of the worst franchises in all of American professional sports, but they’re also one of the most cosmically entertaining, too. How else do you explain the team getting their first win of the season, while putting up season highs in points and yards, just days after the team’s owner through their starting quarterback under the bus?

After beginning the season 0-7, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson faced up to the media and made it quite clear who he personally blamed for the team’s pathetic start: not rookie head coach Aaron Glenn, but quarterback Justin Fields.

“It’s hard when you have a quarterback with the rating that we’ve got.. If you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you’re going to see similar results. If we can just complete a pass, it would look good,” Johnson told the media last week.

At the time of Johnson’s comments, it seemed as though the Jets would be turning to veteran journeyman Tyrod Taylor to start at quarterback against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Taylor, however, wound up being too injured to play, meaning the Jets had to start fields just days after Johnson’s disparaging barbs.

Fields not only started against the Bengals but led the Jets to a 39-38 road victory, their first of the season, while completing 21-32 passes for 244 yards and a touchdown, while also carrying the ball 11 times for 31 yards.

Justin Fields says that he was crying in his closet days before the New York Jets got their first win of the season against the Cincinnati Bengals

After the game, Fields got self-admittedly “vulnerable” while speaking to the media, admitting that his prior week as a member of the Jets left him in tears.

“It’s been a lot for me emotionally, spiritually. When I was on the field, I was damn near about to start crying, not because we won but because of the goodness of God. Everything I’ve been through this past week, everything that we’ve been through as a team these past seven weeks, it was a lot of ups and downs, and I got a lot of support from my teammates, from my brothers, from my family, from my friends, and most of all I’m just thankful. Yesterday I started praying, praying like crazy, just for a win,” Fields said.

“I’m going to get pretty vulnerable right here,” Fields continued. “This week I found myself in my closet crying on the ground, lying down. Not because of the hardships, not because of the troubles. I felt like I was built to handle that … Yesterday I was just praying over and over and over again, just one win.”
