Following the New York Jets’ 39-38 win on Sunday — their first of the season — Justin Fields opened up to the media, giving a peek behind the curtain as to just how tough it is to weather the storm of an 0-7 start.
“This week, I kind of, you know, I found myself in my closet crying, on the ground, laying down,” said Fields, who chose to sign with Aaron Glenn’s team rather than return to the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency. “Not because of the hardships, not because of the struggles. I felt like I was built to handle that and I was put in place to handle this situation.
“But, in that moment, when I was talking to my best friend (about) how hard it was and just not wavering faith-wise. I just had gotten a text from my sister and my stepmom and it was just an encouraging text (saying), ‘Just keep going and just keep spreading the faith.”
Fields went 21 for 32 for 244 yards and a touchdown through the air. Breece Hall’s 4-yard tailback pass to tight end Mason Taylor put the Jets up for good with 1:54 to go. Fields said he’d been praying over and over for a win.
“It’s been a lot for me, emotionally, spiritually,” Fields said. “When I was on the field, I was damn near about to start crying. … Just because of the goodness of God and just how everything worked for the greater good. Everything that I’ve been through this past week, everything we’ve been through as a team these past seven weeks. It was a lot of ups and downs.”
