Justin Fields Favorite to Start for Another AFC Team
Steelers Now Steelers Now

Justin Fields is an interesting case this offseason. The dual-threat quarterback could be back with the Pittsburgh Steelers next season. If he’s not, another team in the same conference could make him its starter.

The New York Jets and Aaron Rodgers didn’t work out. As the team in Gotham green goes a different direction, Fields has the highest odds of any current NFL quarterback to fill his place. Sportsbetting.ag has Justin Fields (3/1) and Russell Wilson (4/1) with the second- and third-best overall chances to be the Jets’ guy next season.

Any rookie quarterback is the most likely to start for New York in Week 1. Those odds are 5-to-2. Former Steelers signal-callers Mitch Trubisky (9/1) and Kenny Pickett (18/1) are included on that list, as well.

How did Justin Fields fare last season?

Justin Fields went 4-2 as a starter with the Steelers. Had Pittsburgh capped off a game-winning drive against Indianapolis and made a goal-line stand late against Dallas, that record could have very well been spotless. Fields threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception in his first year as a Steeler. He also rushed for 289 yards and five scores.

Fields seems to prefer to stick with the Steelers. He wanted to land in Pittsburgh last offseason, and Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles respected him enough to grant that wish. Fields has reposted photos of himself with the Steelers on his Instagram twice this week, which could be taken as a sign he wants to remain in the Steel City.

Head coach Mike Tomlin’s comments during his season-ending press conference last month suggest the interest is mutual.

“I think he took (the steps),” Tomlin said. “I think the way he managed his professional circumstance was really impressive. I thought he brought an urgency to his day-to-day work regardless of his role. I thought he got continually better within our system of ball throughout the process. I thought the way that he conducted himself makes that a legitimate thought or idea at this juncture.”
