Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the field during the New York Jets’ second training camp practice on Thursday after suffering an apparent right toe injury, according to Jets head coach Aaron Glenn.
The injury occurred during an 11-on-11 session. Fields was evaluated by trainers and later carted to the locker room. He was spotted by Connor Hughes of SNY getting his right foot or ankle examined. No official diagnosis has been released, but it’s a concerning development for a quarterback looking to revive his career.
The Steelers open the season against the Jets in Week 1, but Fields’ status for that matchup is now uncertain.
His injury could have ripple effects for the Steelers. Because Fields departed in free agency, Pittsburgh was expected to receive a compensatory pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. That pick was projected to be as high as a third-rounder, but its value is tied to Fields’ playing time and contract. If he misses significant time, the Steelers’ comp pick could be downgraded or wiped out entirely.
Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets this offseason after spending one year with the Steelers. Pittsburgh acquired him via trade from the Chicago Bears, where he was originally a first-round pick in 2021.
It’s a tough break for Fields, who many believed was getting one last chance to prove he could be a starting-caliber quarterback. It also complicates what was already an unsettled quarterback situation in New York. Tyrod Taylor is the backup quarterback, and would likely be in line to face the Steelers in Week 1 if Fields’ injury is serious.
