Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen picked a bad time to put together one of the worst performances of his career.

Josh Allen and the Bills needed a win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday to keep their AFC East hopes alive. But Allen struggled in a rain-soaked affair, and some untimely mistakes by his teammates proved costly in a 13-12 loss.

Buffalo scored 12 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seemingly force overtime. But head coach Sean McDermott went for the win, ordering the offense to attempt a two-point conversion.

Allen had a wide-open Khalil Shakir in the end zone. But the throw was, well, one of the worst of Allen’s life. It fell incomplete. The Eagles held on, and the New England Patriots secured the AFC East division crown.

Per John Wawrow of the Associated Press, Josh Allen shouldered the responsibility for Buffalo’s heartbreaking loss.

“Yeah, I just missed. Rolling left, I’ve got to get him a better ball. It just comes down to us executing, making one more play than they did. And obviously you saw that we didn’t make that last play. I didn’t make that last play.”

Last week, news emerged that Josh Allen was dealing with a foot injury. He certainly didn’t look like his usual self, mustering just 27 rushing yards on seven carries.

Bills’ Super Bowl Hopes Come Down To Josh Allen

The reigning MVP and James Cook have kept Buffalo in the Super Bowl mix this season. Their defense has been a disappointment, and none of Allen’s pass-catchers have been consistent.

Fair or not, Buffalo’s Super Bowl hopes come down entirely to what Allen can do on offense. As we’ve seen throughout his postseason career, the defense will never be reliable enough to win games on its own.

The good news for Buffalo is that there are no Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow in the postseason. Lamar Jackson won’t be there, either. Allen is arguably the best QB representing the AFC in the postseason. He’ll have to be Superman again for the Bills to have a chance.
