Jon Gruden isn’t giving up on coaching.
After a hiatus from coaching stemming from the infamous release of controversial emails that led to his resignation as Raiders head coach in 2021, Gruden is once again eyeing a return to the NFL.
Despite his absence, he would re-emerge in the public eye in 2024 through his YouTube channel, where he created compelling football content that helped him rehabilitate his image.
He then made a shocking move by joining Barstool Sports and quickly became a social media star and one of their most popular personalities.
His plans are to ultimately make it back to the sidelines.
“Hopefully I’m not done,” Gruden told reporters while attending Detroit Lions training camp, per the Detroit Free Press.
“I’m about to make a comeback. I’m working hard to maybe get one more shot, but hopefully some of these guys that fell off my branch, if you say it that way, maybe they can hire me because I’m looking for a job.”
When asked about his chances of returning to the NFL, Jon Gruden said he doesn’t “care about that.”
“I don’t care if I coach at Jones Junior High,” he continued.
“I’m going to coach again. I’m still coaching. I’m just not on a team officially, but I do have some private assignments I work on, and I wear some gear when I’m watching the games that nobody knows about who I’m pulling for.”
It’s unclear if he will ever get another official coaching job in the NFL. He is 117-112 with a Super Bowl title.
Gruden is trying to come back.
He has been out of the league since resigning from the Las Vegas Raisers in 2021 following the leaking of emails that showed him using homophobic and racist language that he sent to then-Washington general manager Brad Allen.
Since then, he has been seen with the New Orleans Saints helping to consult Derek Carr when he was the team’s quarterback. He was also reinstated to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Ring of Honor.
