The NFL and football in general are taking a step backward, according to Super Bowl-winning head coach Jon Gruden. According to Gruden, New York Giants first-round pick Jaxson Dart is an example of how football is “dissolving” rather than evolving in recent years, and he’s worried for the future of the sport.
The comments came during Gruden’s appearance on a recent episode of Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take. The show’s host, Dan Katz, asked Gruden about an interview he did with Dart prior to the NFL Draft. Specifically, Gruden asked Dart to show him the snap count that he used while at Ole Miss. Dart proceeded to clap, which astonished Gruden. Gruden then explained to Katz why he was so taken aback by the answer.
“Pretty much all of them did the same thing,” Gruden said of the other quarterbacks he spoke with. “A lot of people say ‘The game is evolving. The game is evolving.’ Parts of the game are dissolving. We just had (former NFL QB) Steve DeBerg in my office. He’s 71 years old. He threw for 34,000 yards … one of the great ball-handling, play-faking quarterbacks ever … you don’t even see a play-action pass anymore … parts of this game are dissolving.”
Never mind the fact that Gruden is wholly and completely incorrect about play-action passing, which is at an all-time high. That’s a brutal critique of not only Dart but young quarterbacks across the league.
Gruden didn’t completely crucify the Giants’ first-year signal caller, however. In a recent post on X, Gruden said that he expected Dart to be a future starter in New York for a long time.
“You know the MVP experience of last week’s draft is… I think it’s the New York Football Giants,” Gruden wrote. “And I love Jaxson Dart. We had him here at Gruden’s QB class. He’s gonna be the future QB of the Giants.”
So Dart can take some solace in that. But the initial critique on both him and the rest of the young QBs is pretty damning.
