John Schneider: Meetings with Geno Smith to discuss extension scheduled

Fans have wondered whether the Seahawks would look to trade or release the 34-year old signal caller

There’s been no shortage of debate on multiple facets of the offseason for the Seattle Seahawks. From how the Hawks should create the space necessary to come into compliance with the salary cap to whether Geno Smith is the quarterback of the future and who will be under center for the team in 2025.

During his annual media session at the 2025 NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Seahawks general manager John Schneider appears to have killed two birds with one stone, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.

So, as Condotta notes in his tweet, the Seahawks are set to meet with Smith’s agents this week in order to discuss a contract extension that would keep him in Seattle past the 2025 season. That would certainly seem to imply that the plan is for Smith to be under center in 2025, and that the possibility of a trade that sends Smith elsewhere would appear to be off the table, at least for now.

Of course, that’s not to say that the Seahawks wouldn’t be interested if a team were to call up and offer, purely hypothetically, a pair of firsts and a pair of seconds while putting a five-year, $245M contract extension on the table for Smith.

It is worth adding that even though Schneider says there is no deadline to reach an extension with Smith, the deadline for the team to come into compliance with the 2025 salary cap is prior to the start of the new NFL league year at 4 pm New York time on Wednesday, March 12.
