The New York Giants have a good bit of buzz around them heading into next season, thanks in large part to the arrival of head coach John Harbaugh, as well as the recent signing of franchise legend Odell Beckham Jr., among other moves. One move that wasn’t so well-regarded was the multi-year extension of general manager Joe Schoen last month, a decision that was not met with much enthusiasm by fans.
However, Harbaugh understandably kept things cordial when asked his opinion about the extension.
“I respect ownership. That’s their call,” said Harbaugh, per Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News on X, formerly Twitter.
Leonard also reported that Harbaugh indicated that “…Schoen is a good guy and when ownership told him, he agreed.”
Schoen has made some regrettable decisions during his time with the Giants, including the controversial mammoth contract he paid out to quarterback Daniel Jones, who has since departed the franchise, among others. Since their surprising 2022 run to the second round of the playoffs, the Giants have fallen back into the NFL cellar and brought in Harbaugh in large part to help redirect the course of their franchise.
One thing Schoen has given the Giants is an intriguing core of young offensive players, including Malik Nabers, Jaxson Dart, and Cam Skattebo, each of whom dealt with injury concerns in the 2025 season but figures to be a big part of what Harbaugh tries to establish for New York on offense.
If they can manage to stay healthy, the move to extend Schoen could look a little bit better down the road.
The Giants are set to kick off their 2026 season on September 13 with a prime time home game against the divisional rival Dallas Cowboys.
