Former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway didn’t mince words when discussing fellow retired quarterback Terry Bradshaw’s position among the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Elway and Bradshaw have never had a good relationship, and things haven’t improved over the years.

Ahead of the controversial 2025 NFL’s Christmas Day slate, when his Broncos would take on divisional rivals the Kansas City Chiefs, Elway participated in a game where he compared all-time great quarterbacks of the past decades.

The clip, shared by Netflix Sports on X (formerly Twitter), shows Elway picking Joe Montana over other stars such as Patrick Mahomes, Peyton Manning, Lamar Jackson, and Steve Young.

When it came to Montana against Terry Bradshaw, Elway didn’t hesitate.

”No doubt, Joe Montana,” he told Netflix. ”Terry Bradshaw is way down on my list.”

John Elway selected him as the winner after “beating” Tom Brady.

“I always say I would never trade my ability for anybody else, so I’m gonna take me,” he added.

What happened between John Elway and Terry Bradshaw?

To learn more about this beef, we have to go back to 1983, when the then-Baltimore Colts drafted Elway with the No. 1 overall pick. He refused to play for the Colts, instead opting for a baseball career, which raised eyebrows around the league. Bradshaw disapproved of the move and let Elway know.

“I could have done the same thing, but I didn’t. I went (to Pittsburgh). And the thing why I went was because they were 1-13,” Bradshaw said.

“I said, ‘Well, I’ll go up there and I’ll make them a winner.’ And we did. So, the challenge of that and proving to him everybody that I was worthy of being the first draft choice was what inspired me to go on and do the things that we’ve done.

‘”And for a guy like Elway to come and say: ‘Well, I want to be on the West Coast and I want to be on the beach and I’m a California boy.'”

John Elway took the Broncos to the top of the league with back-to-back Super Bowl championships, which included an on-field interview with Bradshaw after his second win.
