Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is happy to now be teammates with Pittsburgh’s new massive weapon on offense.
PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers landed themselves a new massive weapon this offseason, trading for 6-foot-4, 229-pound wide receiver DK Metcalf. Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. revealed it hasn’t always been smooth sailing between him and his new teammate, though.
“We got history, my rookie year,” Porter said. “So I’m always excited to go against good competition.”
Porter first came face to face with Metcalf in a Week 17 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks in 2023. Pittsburgh came away with the 30-23 win, but Porter struggled to keep Metcalf in check as he reeled in five catches for 106 yards.
The Steelers are hoping Metcalf will have similar production with them as their No. 1 wide receiver. Porter doesn’t know why that wouldn’t be the case.
“He’s a great athlete. He’s a great wide receiver. He’s been in the league for a long time,” Porter said.
However, that doesn’t mean Metcalf will continue to get the best of Porter. The 24-year-old has made a lot of strides since the two first lined up against each other a couple of years ago and felt he held is own against Metcalf in his first practice in the black and gold.
“Definitely,” Porter said. “I feel like I always hold my own, so I really wasn’t too worried about that. Just trying to get some good work.”
Either way, Pittsburgh is hoping its two young pieces on each side of the ball will only continue to improve each other’s game.
Porter said he will do his best to keep his end of that deal.
“It’s always going to help,” he said. “It’s never not going to help us, especially as a defense, just seeing those good looks every week. Every chance we get is going to elevate our game and we’re going to do the best we can to elevate theirs.”
