The Washington Commanders are preparing to host the Detroit Lions this week in a rematch of the NFL divisional playoffs earlier this year. The Commanders came into that game as visiting underdogs, and left Detroit with a big win on their way to the NFC Championship game. Washington are big underdogs again this time, but their season has been sliding out of control with four straight losses. The defense has been giving up explosive plays every week and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt knows there has to be some big changes, and his job depends on it.

Dan Quinn said that Whitt would be moving from the box to the sideline starting this week. Whitt said players had asked him about coming down to the sideline and he approached the head coach to make the change. He said he’s always been used to his coordinators being in the box to get a whole field view of the field and the players. Something has to change and Whitt said the play on the field hasn’t met the standard.

Explosive plays:

The amount of explosives that we’re giving up in the pass game is really frustrating, because they’re coming from mistakes that really shouldn’t happen, and I gotta do a better job, or we gotta do a better job of getting that communicated.
