Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joe Haden shared his thoughts on the team’s controversial offseason during an appearance on the Up & Adams Show.
“I wish they wouldn’t have gotten rid of George Pickens,” Haden said. “Because if they would have had those two (Metcalf and Pickens), with A-Rod, it would’ve been trouble for everyone.”
Haden, who played 12 seasons in the NFL, including four with the Steelers, knows firsthand the impact of facing teams with multiple offensive weapons.
It’s hard to argue with his assessment. While Pickens often drew headlines for his antics, his talent was undeniable, even with inconsistent quarterback play in Pittsburgh. The team ultimately decided to move on, trading him to the Dallas Cowboys for a third-round pick.
Finding another weapon to pair with DK Metcalf has been a major talking point throughout the offseason. The Steelers have reportedly explored several options, including tight ends Jonnu Smith and Kyle Pitts. Wide receiver Gabe Davis also visited the team, while big names like Tyreek Hill and Terry McLaurin have been mentioned as potential trade targets.
For now, the wide receiver two spot belongs to Calvin Austin, according to wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni. Austin, a speedster, caught 36 passes last season. Second-year receiver Roman Wilson has also drawn praise during OTAs and minicamp and could emerge as a breakout candidate after an injury-plagued rookie campaign. Veteran Robert Woods, who signed with the team this offseason, offers a steady and experienced presence.
Aaron Rodgers, now 41, still showed he can sling the football, finishing just shy of 4,000 passing yards last season. While Metcalf is expected to be a great addition, adding one more reliable target could significantly elevate the offense.
Whether the Steelers rely on internal development or pursue another acquisition, how they address the position will be a storyline to watch in the coming weeks.
