While Cincinnati Bengals fans wring their hands on whether Joe Flacco will be able to start on Sunday against the Bears, the team’s franchise quarterback continues his quest to get back on the field after his turf toe surgery. The Bengals, sitting at 3-5 with their playoff hopes seemingly teetering on the edge of oblivion, could absolutely use the boost Joe Burrow would give them.

Zac Taylor was asked about Burrow’s progress, and he had the following to say:

“He’s been good. I don’t have any updates (on the timeline). It’s gone as we had hoped,” Taylor said Wednesday. “He’s had a great attitude, great energy about him. He’s in the meetings; I met with him one-on-one. He’s been great to be around, optimistic, and things have been going well, but I don’t have any update on the timeline.”

While Taylor doesn’t have much to say about Burrow’s progress beyond the customary coach-speak, there are signs that things are going in the right direction.

Burrow was seen on the sidelines in a walking boot during the team’s Week 7 win over the Steelers, but in the team’s Week 8 loss to the Jets, he was sans boot, opting for a regular-looking shoe instead. It may mean nothing, of course, and the shoewear probably isn’t indicative of the actual health of the foot, but it seems like a step in the right direction.

Hopefully, the Bengals can stay afloat and “in the hunt” until Burrow is ready, and hopefully that time is soon.
