J.K. Dobbins returned from a season-ending injury in 2023 to record a career-high 905 yards and nine touchdowns for the Chargers this season.

The NFL released the finalists for their numerous end-of-season awards, including MVP and NFL Coach of the Year. Of all the worthy candidates on the Chargers who could have been up for any of these annual honors, only one was actually nominated as a finalist.

After a string of injury-plagued seasons, running back J.K. Dobbins has been nominated for the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year Award after rushing for a career-high 905 yards and nine touchdowns a year after tearing his achilles in the first game of the 2023 season.

Dobbins was signed to a one-year deal by general manager Joe Hortiz as the former Ravens front office member knew he could potentially have something special if the former second-round pick could come back and stay somewhat healthy this season. The player they got was an explosive runner who gave the Chargers run game more life than it has had in a handful of years. Despite missing four games, Dobbins had his most productive season yet and would have been a shoe-in for his first 1,000-yard, double-digit touchdown season.

The other four candidates for Comeback Player of the Year are Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, Bills safety Damar Hamlin, Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez, and Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold.
