JJ Watt knows a thing or two about Pro Bowls. The NFL Legend made five Pro Bowls in his career while dominating the NFL in the 2010’s.

But, there’s no denying that the Pro Bowl has been watered down significantly in recent years as the game has transitioned to flag football and scores of players opt out every year. JJ Watt has had enough, and made it known what he thought of the Pro Bowl on Tuesday.

It wasn’t that long ago that players loved to participate in the Pro Bowl, especially when the annual game was played in Hawaii. But, lately, guys have opted out of the game in Orlando at much higher rates than before. 2022 saw the last year of real football played in the Pro Bowl, as players were not playing hard to prevent injury. So, it’s a flag football game played in a less desirable and exotic location.

The festivities, which used to take place after the Super Bowl until 2010, rarely had players from the two teams playing in the Super Bowl when it was before the Super Bowl, and obviously never has those guys now. But, it’s become more common to see guys who lose on Conference Championship Game Weekend to opt-out.

Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin opted out after the Commanders lost on Sunday. And, opt-outs on the AFC side has meant that players like Drake Maye and Russell Wilson are now in the Pro Bowl. Both of those players have had fine seasons. They’re far from Pro Bowl-worthy seasons, though.

JJ Watt has seen enough. The Pro Bowl used to mean something and simply doesn’t anymore.

When you get 5 alternates deep, just call it the Participation Bowl.

He’s not wrong! The game has lost all of its luster.
