Retirement seems to be going pretty well these days for former NFL superstar JJ Watt. Watt watched the English soccer club he owns get promoted to the Premier League, hit the links, and, most recently, took in a Milwaukee Brewers game.
But it’s what he did at the that Brewers game that is making headlines. Watt, who was last listed at 6-foot-5 and 288 pounds, took on the famed 9/9/9 challenge.
For the uninitiated, the 9/9/9 challenge is simple. Competitors must down nine hot dogs and nine beers in nine innings. For the average person, doing so is a challenge. Back in college at State College Spikes games, the closest I ever came to completing the challenge was five dogs and seven beers.
But JJ Watt is not an average human being. Not only did he complete the challenge, the he made it look easy.
All done.
5.5 innings.

Watt finished the challenge in just 5.5 innings, which is absolutely remarkable. However, some fans contend that by finishing early, he actually made life easier on himself.
“Spreading it out over 9 innings makes it more difficult as it settles in the stomach .. so I’m sorry but you failed the assignment,” one fan replied to Watt.
“I hate to be that guy but he did it wrong,” said another. “Doing 1 beer and 1 hot dog per inning puts your body in more hell and makes the challenge harder. It has to last 9 innings. Gotta respect his ability to down all of that in 5 and a half innings but we’re putting an asterisk on this one.”
Honestly, I had never considered that.
One point that I do agree with is that Watt completing the challenge in a box seat is far easier. He has easy access to fresh hot dogs and beers. The rest of us peons have to buy multiple dogs and beers at the same time, meaning that the dogs get cold and the beers get warm. That just makes the challenge even more difficult.
JJ Watt is a massive human being. So I have no doubt that he could complete the challenge as officially written. But it’s fair to wonder if this version of it has the same validity.
